Mazda Eunos 1.6 in Mariner Blue
This Mariner Blue 1991 Mazda Eunos 1.6 is now available. Originally imported from Japan in 2003, its in lovely condition and has now covered around 85000 miles. Specification on these earlier cars is simple and to the point: electric windows, power steering, air conditioning, stainless steel sill tread plates, an electric aerial...and thats it. The whole point is the driving experience and this is a perfect example of that as it drives very well indeed.
However bodywork is also a big potential problem on any MX5 and on this one, a fortune has just been spent ensuring its solid and strong. Its just had substantial repairs (£1000+) to inner and outer sills, lower rear wheel arches and floors. This lot has been carried out by a specialist who knows what he's doing and does it to a good standard. To be clear, its completely solid everywhere underneath and there is no rust anywhere on the outer body either: the sills, wheel arches and wings are all in clean rust-free condition. There is the odd very minor scratch or stone chip and the driver's door has a couple of difficult to see and very light dings (I think a 'ding' is like a 'dent' but smaller!). It has a stainless steel intake grill fitted along with a rear spoiler. The headlights have been upgraded to Halogen H4s (much better than the standard sealed beam units originally fitted). The soft top is from a later Mk2 in black mohair with glass window and is in good condition and it also has a Mk2 windblocker fitted. Its sitting on a set of MX5 Mk2 15" alloys fitted with slightly wider 205 tyres, all in good condition.
Inside its all in decent condition with no damage to carpets or trim. I still need to wet-valet the seats but otherwise, everything is smart and clean. Everything also works as it should though the air conditioning isn’t particularly strong and probably needs a re-gas. The electric windows and door locks have been cleaned and greased. As can been seen in the photos, it has white dials with blue needles and these look very smart. Its fitted with a good quality Sony stereo and I have just fitted new Sony door speakers so it sounds good too. It even has working headrest speakers, great for top-down driving. The boot is smart and tidy and it has its original jack, wheel brace and space saver spare wheel. Its fitted with the correct battery and this is clamped down properly (which is usually not the case on older MX5s).
This uses the so called 'Long Nose Crank' version of the 1.6 engine and feels as strong as anything. It starts instantly and runs nicely, pulls strongly in all gears and holds it temperature perfectly in all conditions. We have just fitted a new clutch and its also just had a thorough service - new oil and filter, cone air filter cleaned, new spark plugs, handbrake adjusted, new dif oil etc. The actual engine bay is quite smart with a genuine Mazda engine brace fitted and matching blue cam cover. Brakes are all in good order with recent new brake pads all round. Out on the road, it drives well with good performance and the 1.6 engine is a really sweety, revving hard to the red line if required. Its brilliant to push it quite hard along twisting country roads buts it equally happy cruising at today's motorway speeds if required. Its sitting on standard MX5 suspension so handling and ride quality are just perfect and are just as a good MX5 should be. As usual on my sales cars, I like to cover a good 250+ miles so I can satisfy myself that it performs and handles just as a good MX5 should: this one does just that and I reckon its better than most.
I have two keys along two immobiliser fobs and its MOT tested until February 2025. A check on the HPI register shows it as being clear from previous accident damage. I have tried to prepare this one so the new owner can just get on and use it and enjoy it with no immediate expense needed. Its a nice, honest example and its hard to believe its 33 years old – this could easily be used every day. This really is the painless way into classic/fun car ownership and price is £5250
