Mazda MK2 Roadster 1.8 VS Special Edition

Its so difficult to find a really good MX5 Mk2 but when you do, they are just brilliant to drive and offer such good value for money compared to a Mk1. So I’m so pleased at being able to offer this 1999 Mazda Roadster Mk2 1.8 VS for sale, a car that I think is quite special thanks to its history, the way it has been maintained and most importantly, the way it actually drives. It was imported from Japan to the UK in 2003 and has been looked after properly ever since. The last lady owner has had the car since 2009 and its had a very sheltered life having covered just 56500 miles (90400 kilometres indicated) with a very comprehensive service history.

Its finished in Grace Green with tan leather seats and tan trim and carpets along with a Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel and matching handbrake handle. Specification includes electric windows and mirrors, central locking, power steering, stainless steel sill tread plates, and a wind blocker finished in tan to match the rest of the interior. It also has a tan vinyl soft top complete with glass heated window. Its fitted with 14" alloy wheels which have been powder coated with a gunmetal grey finish along with a decent set of tyres, all in good condition.

Bodywork is exceptionally good: wheel arches and wings are in excellent condition (no rust anywhere) and if you run your finger around the inside of the rear inner wheel arch for example, its lovely and clean. Underneath, sills and floors are in good, sound condition. The crucial front chassis rails (known for horrific rust problems) are in excellent condition and are beautifully clean and solid. There is the odd stone chip on the bonnet and minor parking dent but its a very smart car indeed.

Inside, its in just lovely condition: the leather seats are in good order with no tears or splits while the carpets are nice and clean and it still has its original and rare black and white carpet mats. All trim - dashboard, door cards, centre console etc - are in nice clean condition. It has an excellent Kenwood stereo fitted with a USB and AUX IN port etc and this sounds good. The electric aerial works perfectly too. Its worth mentioning that this model has both driver and passenger air bags and it also has an immobiliser fitted. The boot is immaculate and has an original and rare ‘Roadster’ boot mat . The underside of the boot lid – the area around the number plate lights, an area well known for corroding badly - is in excellent condition.

Mechanically this uses the more powerful 146bhp engine and has the benefit of a close ratio six speed gearbox and a Torsen limited slip differential. As a result, it really flies out on the road with excellent performance. The gearbox and clutch are perfect to use and its so easy to drive and feels very much younger/newer than it actually is. Handling and ride quality are also just brilliant, free from any weird and wonderful noises. This is as good as any MX5 to drive and better than most.

There is a comprehensive collection of paperwork including a big pile of receipts for work carried out over the years, a copy of every MOT certificate and the original Japanese service book and owners manual (all in Japanese of course) but with an English owners handbook included. A look through the collection of paperwork shows that when it was imported it had covered 50,000 km (around 31250 miles) so its only covered around 1420 miles a year since then. Its had various new parts fitted over the years including new headlights, new exhaust and power steering pipes. The invoices also show that the cam belt was replaced at 48000 miles and again more recently just 270 miles ago. Its just been serviced and has had a thorough check-over by me and I'm really pleased with how it looks and drives. Its MOT tested until April 2023 and a check on the HPI register shows it to be clear from any previous accident damage. It has the original jack, space saver spare wheel and has two keys.

Good MK2s are set to rise in value (there are so few good ones out there) and this is a really wonderful example. Price is £3995.
