Mazda Roadster 1.8 Mk2.5 Nevada

Its becoming very hard to buy a good Mk2/Mk2.5 and very easy to buy a bad one. This is a particularly good example though: it was supplied new by Nunns of Lincolnshire in July 2003 and has had three previous owners since then and its now covered around 71500 miles. Its a Mazda MX5 1.8 Mk2.5 Nevada Special Edition, 1 of 1350 made in Cerion Silver (which is actually a very pale metallic green). Specification is really very good electric windows and mirrors, ABS brakes, decent CD player with electric aerial, blue leather seats, twin airbags and remote central locking with alarm and immobiliser. Its sitting on its original Mazda 16" alloy wheels, all fitted with decent tyres. Its fitted with a dark blue mohair soft top and even has its original matching blue tonneau cover.

Bodywork is very good indeed and its previously had full sill replacement on both sides, clearly carried out to a good standard. Wheel arches, wings etc are all in good solid, rust-free condition too. Paintwork is also exceptionally good and the car looks fantastic in this colour scheme. The front chassis rails – well known for corrosion - are in good solid condition too. I think I can see a reason for this: the car has been well and truly treated with what looks like waxoil or Dinitrol. I usually give the engine bay a good clean but on this one, I can see waxoil everywhere including inner wings and chassis legs, and while it looks lees than beautiful, its certainly done the job at keeping rust away.

Inside the leather seats are in good condition as are the carpets and all trim. It has its original ‘Nevada’ carpet mats fitted too. It also has its original blue/black Nardi leather rimmed steering wheel along with its original matching Nardi leather gear knob. It has a wind blocker fitted too. The boot is smart and clean and has its original jack and space saver spare wheel.

Mechanically its all good. The cam belt was replaced at around 51000 miles and again more recently. Its also just been serviced with new oil filters, spark plugs etc and within the last week, its had a new clutch fitted. Performance is excellent, easily quick enough to keep up with modern traffic on the motorway but even better when you show it a good country road where the typically brilliant MX5 handling means its genuinely fabulous to drive. Suspension is all standard spec and all the better for it. Ride quality is lovely and there are no rattles, squeaks or any other odd noises.

There is a folder full of paperwork with lots of receipts for service work done over the years showing its been well looked after. I have the original owner’s handbook pack including the original manual and service book and there are two keys. Whenever I prepare a car for sale, I use my own MX5-based checklist which covers 80+ points and ensures that even the detail stuff is checked and any issues spotted and attended to. This includes all sorts of things such as hood catches, drain holes, electric windows, door locks, condition of coolant hoses right down to the state of the cigarette lighter. It means the car is fit for purpose and should behave and drive just as a good MX5 should.

This really is the painless way into classic/fun car ownership. The car looks terrific and drives exceptionally well and while its civilised enough to use every day, its still feels special enough to keep for weekends and special drives out. Price is £4450 and its ready to be used and enjoyed.
