Mazda Eunos 1.8 R2-Ltd - Rare Car

This must be one of the rarest Mazda Eunos models around. Its a Mazda Eunos 1.8 R2-Ltd and only 500 were ever produced for the Japanese market and I reckon there are less than a small handful over here in the UK.

Produced in late 1996, the R2-Ltd is finished in Chaste White with red leather seats and door trim. Originally it would have had red carpets but these have been replaced with black ones by a previous owner. Similarly, the original - and quite ugly - air bag steering wheel has been replaced with a Nardi wood-rimmed wheel - much better looking. Enkei 15" alloy wheels, a yellow engine strut brace, electric windows and power steering are also fitted.

It has the mechanical upgrades found on later cars which include an improved 16-bit ECU, lightened flywheel, later Torsen II limited slip differential with lower ratios and extra under-body bracing. These later cars rev more freely and have noticeably quicker mid-range acceleration. It also has Bilstein suspension, uprated anti-roll bars and its original yellow engine strut brace. All of this is factory fitted by Mazda and not after-market stuff.

This car has been stored away for many years and has only covered 37000km - around 23,300 miles. Its in exceptionally good condition and is solid everywhere: I don't think its ever needed any underbody repairs though I think the wheel arch/sill area on the driver's side has had minor repairs in the past and to a very good standard. Underneath its in very good order: subframes, suspension and running gear are all nice and clean. There is no rust anywhere of course. The paintwork is very good too with just the odd stone chip but no dents or bad scratches. The Enkei alloys are fitted with a set of matching Bridgestone tyres. I have just fitted a brand new dark red mohair soft top complete with glass window. While this was being done, I fitted a Mk2.5 rain rail and new tension cables. Electric window mechanisms and door locks have been cleaned and lubricated.

Inside everything is in sound, clean condition. The red leather seats have some minor marks and creases but no splits, tears or holes. The dashboard and all plastic trim is in very good condition. Its fitted with a good Kenwood CD player. The Nardi steering wheel is in very good condition too.

It feels exceptionally good to drive and feels really tight with no odd rattles or annoying squeaks. The engine feels really strong and smooth with excellent clutch and gearbox feel. It holds its temperature perfectly and is happy cruising at motorway speeds all day long if required though its even more fun on a decent twisty road. Brakes are exceptionally good and discs/pads are in good order. Bilstein suspension can be quite hard and ride quality can suffer but on this one, its just perfect. Ride quality is very good and it handles really well.

Any car that is 27 years old is never going to be perfect but this is a lovely example. Its just had a major service and new MOT and its ready to be used and enjoyed. Price is £8000.
