1996 Mazda Eunos 1.8 - Type II Spec
This Stone Silver 1996 Mazda Eunos 1.8 MK1 is now offered for sale. This is one of the later ‘Type II’ cars which means it has the various improvements Mazda added starting in August 1995. This includes a lightened flywheel, an improved 16-bit ECU, a Torsen lsd with shorter final drive ratios and extra under-body bracing (along with various minor trim changes). It means that while there is only a touch more power – 133bhp to the original 130bhp – acceleration, especially mid-range is substantially better, with an engine that revs so much more freely.
This example has covered around 85000 miles (136000km) and its really nice condition throughout. Specification includes electric windows and mirrors, power steering and an immobiliser. I have a good collection of old receipts along with two keys.
Bodywork is very good with no rust in the usual places (sills, wheel arches, wings etc) I can see that its had minor sill repairs and these have been carried out to a good standard and are good and solid. If you look at the photos of the rear wheel arch/sill area, you can still see the original spot welds so any repairs have been minimal. Underneath its equally good with solid floors, lower sills etc. So to be clear, there is no rust on sills, wheel arches etc – a big plus point on any older MX5. Subframes, suspension components etc are all in good, clean order Paintwork is good as is bodywork though there is the odd minor ‘car park’ type of dent here and there with the most obvious one being on the top edge of the passenger wing (see photos). The others are too small to be seen easily on a photograph. Its a good looking car though and is more solid than most. Its fitted with 15" Enkei lightweight alloy wheels from a Mk2 and these really suit the car well. It also has a black vinyl Mk2 soft top fitted complete with glass window.
Inside it has the standard black cloth seats and black carpets and trim, all in very good clean condition. It has Momo leather-rimmed steering wheel and it has a pair of carpet mats fitted. Everything seems to work as it should (other than the air con which is typically weak). Door cars, plastic trim and dashboard are all in good condition. The Pioneer CD player works well and sounds good and it has an electric aerial fitted.
The engine bay is tidy and mechanically, its completely standard (no aftermarket exhaust or air filter etc). It holds its temperature perfectly in all conditions and sounds and feels as smooth as anything. Out on the road, its just terrific to drive with surprisingly strong performance, especially form 70mph upwards where it really picks up strongly and pulls hard, The gearbox and clutch feel just right as do the brakes. Ride quality is good and there are no odd noises and of course it handles exceptionally well. I’ve probably covered a good 200 miles in it and its lovely to drive.
When I acquired this one, it had been off the road and in storage for a few years: I think its only covered 5000 miles in the last 9 years. We thought the best approach was to carefully go right through the car giving it a major service. Along the way, its had new front brake discs and pads, new oil, filter, spark plugs, air filter, ECU checked for fault codes, handbrake cleaned and adjusted, electric window mechanisms cleaned and serviced, soft top drain holes cleared, door locks greased, ignition timing re-set etc. Its MOT tested until June 2024 but I intend to give it a new MOT anyway, just for everyone’s peace of mind. There is a file full of receipts for past maintenance work plus old MOT certificates etc. A check on the HPI register shows it to be free from previous accident damage or any other misdemeanours. Price is £5250.
