Mazda Eunos 1.8 S-Special in Laguna Blue
This Mazda Eunos 1.8 S-Special is now offered for sale by Goodwood Sportscars. Its a 1993 model finished in Laguna Blue with black leather seats and trim. In the photos and on the video, it looks a lot like Mariner Blue (a solid colour) but its definitely Laguna Blue which is a touch lighter and has a metallic finish.
Spec includes electric windows, power steering, a Momo steering wheel, stainless steel speaker surround s and sill tread plates and an immobiliser. Lets get the big one out of the way: its covered 267000 kilometres which is about 166500 miles and yes thats a lot BUT read on to why this isn’t such an issue with this car.
This example was owned by an enthusiast who used it for trips into Europe and consequently, its been very well maintained. We had some bodywork repairs carried out when it arrived which included having both rear wheel arches cut out and replaced with new panels and we then had the complete car repainted. Consequently, bodywork is very with no rust while wheel arches, sills and wings are all good. Over the years, its had repairs to the sills, inner wheel arches and floors and while they don’t replicate the exact shape of the original panels, there are all smart and solid. I have photos of some of the previous repairs which I have added to the collection of images here. When the sills were repaired, the underside was treated with Dinitrol and more recently, its been treated again with Dynax. There is the odd very minor stone chip and a tiny spot of overspray if you look hard enough but its still a smart and solid, good looking car.
Its sitting on a set of original BBS 14” alloy wheels and these have just been refurbished and powder coated. All are fitted with a set of Uniroyal Rainsport tyres. The soft top is a black mohair one and has a zip-out plastic window and its in good condition. It also has a very rare genuine Racing Beat rear spoiler fitted.
Inside, the black leather seats are in good order with a few creases in line with its age but no holes or splits. It has a Momo steering wheel and an original Mazda leather gear knob. Everything works as it should and its fitted with a good Sony stereo along with new JVC door speakers.
Mechanically, it gets interesting. Some years ago (2020) the original engine died and a new 80,000-mile engine was found and rebuilt using new ancilliaries. Its also had a Racing Beat air filter fitted along with a four-branch performance exhaust manifold mated to a stainless steel Powerflow exhaust system and this has really woken the car up. I can safely say that this has much better performance than a standard 1.8. The minute you turn the key, you can tell that you’re in for a treat as the exhaust note is much nicer than standard (though its not loud either). Out on the road, it just flies with a really strong mid-range. Gearbox and clutch are just right and its genuinely a joy to drive.
In preparation for sale its had:
New brake calipers all round, new brake discs and pads all round, two new anti-roll bar links, new brake fluid, a new radiator, new spark plugs and ignition leads, new oil and filter and its just gone through my 80+ point check list and its also just been MOT tested.
It has a huge history file, full of receipts for work done along with old MOTs and a collection of old photos. This shows that the cambelt and water pump were replaced three years ago along with new gearbox bushes and boots, new clutch slave cylinder etc. The file also documents and records the engine change and the sill repairs along with photos.
Its had an absolute fortune spent on it over the years and while its not perfect by any means, it looks terrific, its solid and its just brilliant to drive. Thanks to the suspension set-up, this handles really well – much better than a car on standard suspension. The car feels wonderfully responsive with superb handling and steering feel and is the perfect antidote to today’s modern 300bhp, two ton barges.
