Ruby the 1990 Mazda Eunos

This Mazda Eunos 1.6 is one that I've been asked to sell on behalf of its owner via my business, Goodwood Sportscars. Its a lovely example finished in Classic Red with black cloth seats and trim and specification includes power steering, electric windows and a nice Momo wood-rimmed steering wheel.

Its been owned by a real MX5 enthusiast for the last six years and for him, the car is known as 'Ruby' or strictly speaking 'Ruby The Second' as the owner originally owned a similar red Eunos named Ruby for 20+ years before this one. A previous owner of the car here recently got in touch to tell me that back in 2007 when he owned the car, it was called Roadie the Roadster, a name inherited from an even earlier owner. All sounds slightly mad but it just shows you how these MX5s really endear themselves to their owners and there is a good reason for that.

On the face of it, this looks like a standard Eunos but the way its been looked after and the way it now drives really sets it apart from others. Earlier this year, it had a huge amount of work done on the sills (inners and outers) and rear wings along with a paintwork tidy up so its all solid and very smart. In fact bodywork is exceptionally good with excellent rust-free sills, wings and wheel arches. Paintwork is very good too with no dents or scratches: its simply a very good looking, very straight car.

Inside everything is smart and tidy and the dashboard and all trim is in good order. The JVC stereo sounds good and the Momo wheel suits the car well. It also has a white instrument dials.

Within the last 18 months, its had its complete cooling system replaced (new hoses, radiator etc), a new soft top fitted (black vinyl with zip out window, fitted by me earlier this year), new Avon rear tyres, numerous services, engine mounts replaced, new cambelt, water pump and lots more.

Out on the road, its just lovely to drive with great performance and its exceptional smooth and quiet, by MX5 standards. Its fitted with adjustable coil-over suspension and it handles nicely while still retaining ice ride quality. Typical of a good MX5, its a cracker to drive: in fact the current owner has driven the car all over Europe on various holidays and its just wonderful – better than your average MX5 of this age.

A couple of points worth mentioning: as you can see, its a ‘K’ reg which normally translate into a 1992/93 car. However, the car is actually a 1990 model as confirmed by the chassis number check and we reckon the wrong date was applied when it was imported into the UK some years ago. And that brings us on to the second point: if it was indeed a 1990, that would usually mean that it would have an earlier ‘short nose crank’ engine which can have their own unique problems. However this one was fitted with a replacement ‘long nose crank engine’ about five or six years ago and its been very well maintained ever since.

Its covered around 184000km (so about 115000 miles) and there is a large file full of receipts and paperwork. Its MOT tested until February 2027.

Its quite difficult to get across just how nice this one is but if you are after a good, well looked-after Eunos, this is worth a look. Price is circa £6350 which should give some indication of how highly I regard this one.
