Mazda Eunos 1.6 in Crystal White - Exceptional
Around 10 years ago, we imported this 1992 Mazda Eunos 1.6 from Japan. The thinking at the time was that its condition was way above 95% of the cars available in the UK with superb bodywork and a fantastically clean underside. The chap who then bought the car from us kept it garaged, looked after it properly and carried out a few sympathetic upgrades over the years and I’m pleased to now be able to offer this for sale again. If anything, the reasons we were attracted to the car a decade ago are even more valid now.
Its finished in Crystal White and sits on a set of genuine 14” Panasport alloys along with a matching set of Dunlop tyres and it has a black mohair soft top. Inside, its in lovely condition with black leather seats, a Momo leather rimmed steering wheel, wood gear knob and white dials. Its all in good clean condition and looks beautifully classic and understated. Its now covered an indicated 119400km (around 74600 miles) with the owner having covered just 10,000 miles in 10 years.
For me, the big factor that means one MX5 is worth £1500 while a seemingly similar one is £7000+, is the state of the bodywork. This one is exceptionally good both underneath and on top. There is no rust on wheel arches, sills, wings or anywhere else and paintwork is very good indeed. There are no significant dents, stone chips or scratches – its in first class order. Underneath, its never need any repairs and has never been welded. All of the original spot welds are present on the rear wheel arch/sill lips and all seams etc are correct. Both subframes and suspension components are all lovely and clean, rare for any Eunos MX5 these days. Shock absorbers and springs were replaced with new standard specification Mazda items a few years ago. I.L. Motorsport chassis braces are fitted to both front and rear underside along with a stainless steel brace in the engine bay.
Other work carried out on the car includes the fitting of an I.L. Motorsport silicon hose set and in 2021 it had a new cam belt, water pump, auxiliary belts, camshaft and front crank oil seals, camshaft tensioner pulleys and cam sensor ‘O’ ring, along with a replacement thermostat housing. Its been regularly serviced and wheel alignment has also been correctly set (by AK Automotive). Other items worth pointing out are the new clear indicator/sidelight units and it has a Sony stereo along with uprated JVC headrest speakers and an electric aerial.
It drives beautifully well, the engine happy to rev round to the redline and the gear change precise and with lovely feel. Clutch and brakes are all in perfect order and partly thanks to new suspension and correct wheel alignment, it handles just as a good MX5 should and with good ride quality. Performance is strong and its at its best on a good winding country road where its a blast to drive.
Its the detail that I like: the inside of the door shuts – where the door meets the front wing – is beautifully clean. The door to side window trim is in perfect condition. The wheels are in super condition. I could on but hopefully you get the idea. I often say that sales cars look better in the photos than in real life: this is the opposite and it really needs to be viewed to see for yourself how good it is. The car has been prepared so that it can be used and enjoyed straight away. Its just been MOT tested, checked over by me, recently serviced and is ready to go with no further expense needed. Its had just one UK owner and it has two keys, its original wheel brace, jack space saver spare wheel, tonneau cover and has a huge file of receipts for work carried out along with a workshop manual.
This is an exceptional car, not to be confused with the tired, rusting example often seen and price is £7250.
