Mazda MX5 Mk2.5 1.8 Montana 2002
Finding a good solid Mazda MX5 Mk2.5 is becoming increasingly difficult. Its a real shame as these later cars are brilliant to drive with much more power than a Mk1 and a chassis thats some 38% stiffer. This one is quite rare too as its a 1.8 Montana finished in Garnet Red with tan leather seats and trim and only 250 of these were ever produced in this colour combination (another 250 were produced in Green/beige). Its arguably one of the best Mk2.5s to own thanks to the combination of performance and excellent specification.
This one was supplied by Robinsons Mazda of Leicester in 2002 and has a comprehensive service history. This includes the original owners handbook pack including the service book and a good collection of receipts. This helps confirm the indicated mileage of just 65250 miles. Its covered just 12000 miles in the last 10 years (and just 3000 in the last 6 years). Its clearly been cherished and beautifully looked after and is superb condition throughout.
Specification is really good and includes electric windows and mirrors, power steering, heated leather seats, Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel along with matching handbrake handle and gear knob, driver and passenger airbags, remote central locking with two keys, front fog lights, matching carpet over-mats and a chrome style bar. The matching wind blocker and very rare tonneau cover finish the car off perfectly. It has a black mohair soft top in excellent condition.
Bodywork is in excellent condition. The paintwork is superb with a fabulous finish and wheel arches, sills, wings etc are all rust free. It had some work to the sills a couple of years ago and these are solid and sound and the work was clearly carried out to a high standard. Unusually the front chassis rails (which 95% of the time are rotten on a MK2/Mk2.5) are in excellent order. Inner wheel arches are also good and solid. The 15” wheels look as though they have been powder coated within the last couple of years and are in good condition and are fitted with good quality tyres all round.
Inside, its in particularly good condition. The leather seats are in lovely clean condition as are carpets and other trim. The wood trim (steering wheel, centre console etc) are in perfect condition. Its one of the cleanest Mk2.5s I have seen and its a lovely place to be. Everything works as it should and it has a nice CD/radio unit.
This uses the later 146bhp VVT 1.8 engine along with a 5 speed gearbox and it really flies with really strong performance while the gearbox and clutch are just as they should be. Out on the road, there are no squeaks, no rattles and no leaks from the drivetrain – its brilliant to drive.
Its just been serviced and has had recent brake pads all round. The rear suspension/subframe area is remarkably clean with all components in particularly good order. I’m guessing that some of this has been rebuilt/refurbished as I can see the lower arms have poly bushes fitted and everything is in very much cleaner condition than I would normally expect. Its just been MOT tested (through to end of January 2023).
I should emphasise again how hard it is to find a Mk2.5 in a condition as good as this. This is also one of the most sought after MX5 Mk2.5s. Its ready to be used and enjoyed and I’m sure its new owner will love it. Price is a firm £3950.
