Mazda MX5 Mk2 1.8 VS Automatic
Its becoming increasingly difficult to find a decent MX5 Mk2 with a good rust free body: unfortunately MK2s can suffer from more rust issues than the Mk1 – and the Mk2.5 is even worse.
So I’m so pleased at being able to track this one down and offer it for sale. Its a 1999 Mazda Roadster Mk2 1.8 VS Automatic and one of the reasons that it has such good bodywork is that it wasn’t imported from Japan to the UK until 2016. Its had just one previous owner and its clearly been very well looked after and looks to have led a fairly sheltered life.
Its finished in Grace Green with tan leather seats and tan trim and carpets along with a Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel and matching handbrake handle. Specification includes electric windows and mirrors, central locking, power steering, stainless steel sill tread plates, and a wind blocker finished in tan to match the rest of the interior. I have just replaced the soft top with a brand new vinyl tan top complete with glass heated window. While this was being replaced, the hood frame was cleaned and lubricated and the drain holes checked and cleared. Its fitted with 15" BBS alloy wheels and these suit the car really well and are fitted with a decent set of tyres, all in good condition.
Bodywork is good and crucially, it has no rust. Wheel arches and wings are in excellent condition and if you run your finger around the inside of the rear inner wheel arch for example, its lovely and clean. Its never been welded or restored and underneath, sills and floors are in good, sound condition. The all-important front chassis rails (known for horrific rust problems) are in excellent condition and are as clean as any I have ever seen on a MK2.
Inside, its just lovely. The seats are a very slightly different shade of tan and have the odd crease and signs of past repairs but look good and suit the car. Carpets are nice and clean and it has a new set of carpet mats fitted. All trim - dashboard, door cards, centre console etc - are all in nice clean condition. Its fitted with Lockwood white dials and also has a very handy automatic lights-on feature. It has an excellent Kenwood stereo fitted with Bluetooth and USB and AUX IN port etc and this sounds good. Its worth mentioning that this model has both driver and passenger air bags.
Mechanically this uses the 140bhp engine but has the excellent Jatco 4 speed automatic gearbox complete with overdrive and it works so well in this model. For some reason the gearbox was rebuilt a couple of years ago (unusual as they are near indestructable) at a cost in excess of £2000. Gear changes are really smooth and the 'box is nicely responsive. Its so easy to drive and performance is really strong. In fact this car drives really well with excellent handling and ride quality, free from any weird and wonderful noises. In fact I have used this car quite a lot over the last few weeks - its just lovely to drive.
Its covered an indicated 127500 kilometres which equates to around just 79700 miles. The engine is in excellent order and has a performance air filter and air intake cross-over pipe fitted. The engine bay is in incredibly clean condition with no leaks. A look through the collection of paperwork shows that when it was imported it had covered 114,466 km (around 71500 miles) so its only covered 8000 miles over the last 5 years or so. At that point, it had all fluids replaced (including coolant, dif oil, transmission oil and brake fluid). There are quite few receipts showing service work including new cat converter and new brakes.
It also has its original Import Certificate and Japanese handbook (usefully, all in Japanese…). I have just serviced it again with new NGK spark plugs, new oil and new filters. Its had a thorough check-over by me and I'm really pleased with how it looks and drives. It will be sold with 12 months MOT too and a check on the HPI register shows it to be clear from any previous accident damage. It has the original jack, space saver spare wheel and has two keys. It will be fitted with an original spec square import front number plate (missing on the photos as I am replacing the actual plate).
Good MK2s are set to rise in value (there are so few good ones out there) and few have a bodyshell in as good condition as this one. Price is £2995.
