Mazda Eunos 1.6 in Red - 1989

This is a lovely example of an early Mazda Eunos 1.6. Finished in Classic Red with dark cloth seats and trim, it was registered in Japan in December 1989 and its been owned by the same family for the last 17 years. Its covered around 100,000 miles, has electric windows, power steering and has a Momo steering wheel. I think it looks terrific with the 14" BBS alloy wheels and the red mohair soft top. The soft top shows some signs of wear and I need to give it a good clean but I'm keen to retain it as it looks so good on the car. If you are not a fan of the red soft top, I have a black one which I can easily fit if required.

There isn't a huge amount of history or paperwork with this car though one notable receipt is for repairs to the sills/wheel arches by MX5 specialist Thrussington Garage (old arches cut out and new metal added) around 4 years ago. The sills and wheel arches are certainly solid and tidy. When I get a car in like this, with little paperwork, I have to start from the beginning and thoroughly check absolutely everything. I have already covered 300 or so miles which helps confirm that its a good example and is just lovely to drive. Its very obvious that its been very well looked after by previous owners and is in very good and very usable condition, especially when you consider that its 32 years old.

The bodywork is very good indeed. Its had some paintwork carried out and there are no scratches, dents or rust and the paint polishes up very nicely indeed. Underneath its very good with solid sills and floors and no sign of holes or corrosion. As shown in the photos, the rear number plate has a small crack in it. Its just had a new windscreen fitted (last week).

Inside, its in really nice smart condition with no obvious wear to the cloth seats, good carpets, clean trim and plastics. I'll be replacing the leather gaiter around the gear lever with a new one. It has an alloy Eunos gear knob and Momo steering wheel. The stereo works well and is a Pioneer system with inputs for an auxiliary lead and a usb. Everything works as it should including the heater though the air con is past its best.

Mechanically the car appears to be quite standard which is slightly puzzling as it really flies. Mid -range acceleration is especially strong and it will pull from 1000rpm in fifth gear. I know from experience that these early 1.6s can feel really strong and for many people, are the sweet spot of MX5 MK1 production. They rev beautifully and just feel like a real driver's car. This one is an absolute blast on the 'B' roads and handles wonderfully well. Both the exhaust system and air intake are standard and I have just serviced the car with new oil and filter, new NGK spark plugs and new air filter. The clutch and brakes all feel just right. Brake discs, pads and calipers have all been checked and clean and work perfectly. The 14" BBS Mazda alloy wheels suit the car well and are fitted with a set of Firestone tyres, date stamped 2017 and all with approx 6mm of tread left.

Its recently been MOT tested (until January 2023) and is ready to be used straight away with no additional expense required. The eagle eyed will spot that it has just one hole in the radiator slam panel under the bonnet, indicating that its a very early car. A chassis number check confirms this. Price is £3995 and its only going to increase in value.
